Nearly seven months after a fire caused major damage to its building, the Wilmington Family YMCA will open an “Express Y” at the Market Street Plaza Shopping Center at Kerr Avenue and Market Street.
A grand opening celebration will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:45 p.m. The facility will open for members at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31 with all classes being held as scheduled. The opening will provide the YMCA with the facility needed to serve members’ health and wellness needs until renovations are completed at the Y’s 2710 Market Street location.
“We are extremely excited to reach this milestone,” said YMCA CEO Dick Jones. The Express Y includes a large wellness area, a cycling and TRX room, a yoga and Pilates studio, a group exercise studio, a Y Café, family restroom, adult locker rooms, saunas and a large childcare area.
The Y’s six-lane pool and gymnasium reopened in July, with modular locker rooms constructed and placed on site until the restoration brought on by February’s fire is complete.
