Cape Fear 4    Union County (N.J.) 1

Former New Hanover High School product Franco Fernandez notched his first college goal as the Cape Fear Community College defeated Union County Community College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Sea Devils outshot Union 15-5 to improve to 1-0 overall. Connor Belk made four saves in the result. Cape Fear travels to La Plata, Maryland for their next match against College of Southern Maryland on Saturday, August 29.

Battle at the Beach Soccer Tournament

Ashley 2    New Bern 1 

Duenis Arriola and Josh Chapman both found the back of the net to lift Ashley 2-1 over New Bern on Saturday. The Screaming Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season.

Laney 2   Cary 1

Laney earned a 2-1 result over Cary on Saturday. Wesley Nelson scored for the third straight game off an assist from Robert Atkinson and Tristan Nelson notched the game-winner in the 54th minute. Owen Platt made three saves in net for the Bucs, who moved to 2-0-1 overall.

Sanderson 2     New Hanover 1

Shaffer Lisle scored New Hanover’s lone goal off an assist by Jackson Lumpkin in a 2-1 setback against Sanderson. Roman Lewis had two saves for the Wildcats, who fell to 2-2 on the year. New Hanover faces East Bladen at Legion Stadium on Wednesday, August 26.

Port City Invitational Tennis Tournament

Hoggard dropped a pair of matches 9-0 and 5-4 on Saturday and fell to 0-2 on the year. The Vikings host Cape Fear Academy on Tuesday, August 25. Laney picked up a 6-3 win over Pinecrest, but did not pick up a single match in a 9-0 setback to Broughton.
