Elma Louise Herring Horrell Boone, of Wilmington, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the age of 90.
Born on April 20, 1925, in Harrells, Elma was the daughter of William and Winnie Herring. She was a strong, dedicated Christian and a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as a director of WMU, taught Sunday school and served as a GA leader and on the Board of the Wilmington Baptist Association.
She found great joy in sharing the love of Christ by participating in mission trips in the United States, Africa, China, Brazil and the Holy Land. She retired after 25 years from Bank of America, where she made many friends of her clients.
After her faith, the most important thing to Elma was her family. She gave unconditional love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The lessons she taught to her many loved ones will be passed down for generations to come. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her love and time she shared with others will always be cherished and never forgotten. She was indeed a gracious and southern lady of her time.
Elma was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Horrell and Sheldon Boone; sons, Larry Horrell and Sammy Horrell; and brother, J. R. Herring.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane Horrell Summers (Bobby Pollitt), of Wilmington and Tiffin, Ohio; stepson, Jim Boone (Linden), of Wilmington; stepdaughter, Lynne Boone, of Wilmington; sister, Shelby Evans Powell, of Wilmington; brother, Stephen Herring, of Palm City, Florida; grandchildren, Tim Summers (Shannon), Trey Summers (Toni), Tamara Summers Costantini (Chris), Jeffrey Horrell (Wendy), Heather Smith (Joel), Brian Horrell, Phillip Horrell, Sarah Horrell and Sadie Horrell; step-grandchildren, Peggy Boone, Scott Boone and Marshall Malpass; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at Calvary Baptist Church, 423 N. 23rd St., with Pastor Donnie Lovette officiating. Her son, Sammy Horrell, passed away just a week ago. His memory will also be honored during her services. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Harrells Cemetery in Harrells.
