Senior middle hitter Meredith Peacock was picked by the Colonial Athletic Association’s volleyball coaches as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year and UNCW was voted to finish tied for second behind preseason favorite College of Charleston.
“This is truly a great honor for Meredith because it shows that all her hard work is being noticed by our CAA opponents,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek, who enters her seventh season with the program. “She is a remarkable athlete and teammate, who can greatly impact the outcome of a match.”
Peacock was first-team All-CAA as a junior and becomes the first UNCW player to be picked as the preseason Player of the Year. Junior outside hitter Nicole Lott also earned honorable mention honors.
Peacock ranked fifth in the nation in blocks per set (1.53) and sixth in total blocks (178). Both were conference-leading totals. Offensively, she ranked fourth in the CAA with a .288 hitting average. She became the first Seahawk to earn AVCA All-East Region honorable mention.
UNCW fashioned its second straight 20-win season, posting an impressive 21-11 record overall and 10-6 in conference play. The 10 wins in league play were a program record.
“A second place finish certainly sets the bar high this season, but I feel we have the right players to be solid across the board both offensively and defensively,” Bambenek added. “Overall I feel the CAA will be stronger than years past, so as a team it will require a lot of work, effort and determination to achieve our goals in 2015.”
UNCW opens the season at the Big Orange Bash with a 7 p.m. start at Clemson on Aug. 28.
