A New Hanover paramedic, who was charged with the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man in Hampstead, was recently indicted on a murder charge.
Dennis Robert Westberg, 37, was indicted July 27 by a Pender County grand jury on charge of first-degree murder, according to court records. Westberg was charged with the death of Larry Joshua Goodson on Friday, June 26.
According to Pender County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jamie Ezzell, deputies responded to Westberg’s home in the 400 block of Moores Landing Road where he reportedly called 911 to report he had shot someone at the home.
Deputies found Westberg standing outside his Hampstead home, Ezzell said. Goodson, also of Hampstead, was fatally shot inside the home.
Westberg was hired as a paramedic at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in December 2004, according to hospital spokeswoman Claire Parker. He was placed on unpaid leave on June 26, Parker said.
Westberg is being held at the Pender County jail under a $250,000 secured bond, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in Pender County Superior Court on Sept. 18.
