Gene Hickman, 75, met his wife on a blind date by his mother, ‘the rest is history’ is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

Gene Hickman, of Sunset Beach, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 75.

He was born March 14, 1940, in Wilmington, the son of Marie and Vernie Hickman.

Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served as petty officer third class from 1959 to 1963. After his service, he settled in Arlington, Virginia, where he entered the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union #26 Electrical Apprenticeship School in 1963. He served as a general foreman until his retirement in 1999.

Gene met his wife Gloria on a blind date arranged by his mother, Marie, and Gloria’s sister, Lorena. They had worked together at the C&P Telephone Company in Washington D.C. It took several phone calls to convince Gloria to agree to the blind date. Gene and Gloria soon discovered they had many things in common and pursued a second date. According to God’s plan, the rest is history. Gene and Gloria had 53 beautiful years together and had two children, Teresa Marie and Douglas Gene.

Gene accepted Jesus Christ as a small child and rededicated his life in 1975. He raised his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and never failed to testify of the Lord to everyone he met. He was a godly father who talked the talk and walked the walk. He was a dear friend, a counselor to many and a faithful prayer warrior.

He  is survived by his wife, Gloria; daughter, Teresa, husband Jeff Kyer and their children, Jeffrey, Jesse, Morgan and Bailie; son, Douglas, wife Laura and their children, Leah, Austin, Jason and Cole; great-grandchildren, Jadyn, Jordan, Janna, Julius and Brantley; oldest sister, Dawn Marie McLain; and many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Vernie Hickman; younger sister, Fran Harrelson; and grandson, Joshua Andrew Kyer.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Anchor Baptist Church in Little River, South Carolina. Burial will follow at Brunswick Memorial Gardens in Shallotte. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422 or Anchor Baptist Church, 3300 State Highway 50, Little River, SC 29566.
