Wilmington Sharks continue run, open three-game playoff series

The scene is set for round one of the 2015 Coastal Plain League (CPL) Petitt Cup Playoffs. The Wilmington Sharks (29-24, 15-12) have drawn the No. 2 seed in the CPL East and face off against the third-seeded Peninsula Pilots (28-24, 13-14).

Wilmington and Peninsula split their regular season series 1-1, while the Sharks outscored the Pilots 16-12. Each of the meetings were in late July, with the most recent game being a 13-7 Sharks victory in Hampton, Virginia.

Game 1 will be on Wednesday, Aug. 5,  at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton in a best-of-three series. Game 2 will be at the Shark Tank in Wilmington on Thursday, Aug. 6. Wilmington will also host game 3, if necessary.

Unused general admission tickets from the regular season can be used for admission to a playoff game. Reserved tickets from games cancelled due to weather can be exchanged for the best available ticket.

The Sharks finished the regular season winners in seven of their last 10 games. Former New Hanover High School standout Sam Foy is batting .302 this season, with 10 doubles and 21 RBIs. UNCW ballplayers Kenard McDowell and Gavin Stupienski have also played a big role in the team’s success, while Ncik Rotola serves as the clubs leading hitter, batting .357 in in 48 games played this summer.

The pitching staff has a combined 3.45 ERA. John Parke, Caleb Johnson and Michael Castellani are tied with a team-high four wins on the mound, while Matt Vogel and Evan Brabrand have a combined seven saves.
