Clara L. Cayton died peacefully July 29, 2015, at her home. She was 87.

She was born in Greenville on March 31, 1928, daughter of the late Elbert Lane and Melissa H. Lane. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Cayton; brother, Bill Lane; and brother-in-law, John Oliver.

She is survived by her son, Donald Cayton (Cindy); daughter, Patricia Southerland (Larry); grandsons, Allen Southerland (Linda) and Steve Southerland (Leah); great-grandchildren, Ivey, Siara and Sophia; brothers, Richard Lane (Marie) and George Lane; sisters, Eskalene Lora Oliver and Mary Carole Deal (Jim); and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews, all of whom she loved greatly.

She loved receiving the Christmas photo cards of all of the children in her family each year. Clara was a loving mother and grandmother, a great cook, homemaker, volunteer dispatcher for the Wrightsboro Volunteer Fire Department in its earlier years and a lifelong member of the Women’s Club of Wrightsboro.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to thank the Lower Cape Fear Hospice staff and nurses for their special and loving care and a very special thank-you goes to her three caregivers. We can never thank you all enough and were truly blessed for the care and love you gave our mother in the last year of her life. Thank you all.
