Michael C. Westerling, 73, Vietnam War veteran who ran a bookstore in Arizona

Michael C. Westerling, of Shallotte, died July 29, 2015, at the age of 73.

Born July 19, 1942, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Clifford and Margaret Westerling. Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ali.

He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, Connecticut, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut. While at UCONN, he was a member of the football team and played tight end.

At UCONN, he was an ROTC student and upon graduation entered the service of the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune. He served as a captain in the Vietnam War before returning to civilian life.

Michael, Ali and their children settled in Connecticut. They eventually moved to Phoenix where they opened a bookstore. The Anasazi bookstore had a mailing list of avid readers from Arizona and around the world.

Michael is survived by his brothers, David (Judy) and Clifford (Janice) Westerling; sisters, Penny Corn (Jules) and Lisa Edele (Blaine); daughter, Sharon Richmond (Frank); son, Phillip Eisenman; daughter, Sara Diamond; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel followed by a service with military honors at 11 a.m.
