Wilmington Christian golfer sits one back at Carolinas Junior Championship

Heading into day two of the 66th Annual Carolinas Junior Championship in Greensboro, Wilmington Christian Academy standout Blake Taylor stood three shots back from defending champion Henry Shimp.

Taylor had an up-and-down afternoon to post an even-par, 72. He finished with three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and moved one spot up the leader board as the rising senior finished one over on the back to remain three-under-par for the tournament. Heading into the final day of competition, Taylor trails by one stroke behind Shimp and A.J. Beechler, who head into round three at minus-four.

Classmate Joey Funderburg continued his strong play into the second round as the WCA standout was at even par at the turn after making birdie on the par 5, 578-yard, ninth. He added two straight birdies on the back nine and finished round two with a one-under-par, 71.

After shooting 75 on the opening day of action, Funderburg sits at plus-two for the tournament. He made Thursday’s cut line and sits tied at 31st among the 138 players competing at the event.

The 36-hole cut line fell at six-over-par 150 for the low 60 and ties. 62 players will play the final round Thursday beginning at 8 a.m. from the first and 10th tees.

At the 55th Annual Girls Junior Championship in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Anna Moore of Wilmington shaved nine strokes off her opening round total and finished 56th at the tournament (110+101=211).
