Crime notebook: Man injured in Sunday shooting; 3 Brunswick men face drug trafficking charges

A 20-year-old man was injured in a shooting in the 900 block of South 13th Street at about 5:52 p.m. Sunday, according to police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

The man was dropped off at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries that were considered not life-threatening. Police found several bullet shell casings in the roadway at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Also reported in Wilmington, a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in the 4200 block of Market Street at about 8:50 p.m. Sunday, according to Lindsay. The 57-year-old man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was in critical condition on Monday. Lindsay said the driver of the vehicle will not be charged in the wreck.

Three men were recently arrested on drug trafficking charges in Brunswick County.

Lavern Flowers, 57, and Derrick Antonio Daniels, 35, were arrested in connection with trafficking cocaine, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax. Detectives conducted a controlled purchase of cocaine based on tips from the community.

According to arrest warrants, Flowers is charged with possessing nearly 30 grams of cocaine. He is charged with conspiring to traffic in cocaine with Daniels.

Flowers, of Longwood, has been charged with trafficking cocaine, once count of conspire to traffic in cocaine, three counts of conspire to sell and deliver cocaine, three counts of selling and delivering cocaine, three counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked at the Brunswick County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

Daniels, of Bellamy Road in Longwood, is charged with three counts of conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, possession of cocaine, three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to an arrest warrant, Daniels is charged with possessing two handguns and an assault rifle. He is also charged with an assault on Flowers with a tire iron.

Daniels was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in September 1996, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections. He was booked at the Brunswick County jail under a $3 million secured bond.

In a separate drug trafficking case, 25-year-old Erik Jerel Gore was arrested July 22 after a search warrant was executed at his Supply home on Cedar Grove Road, according to Flax. Detectives reportedly seized more than 500 bags of heroin and $7,155 in cash.

Gore has been charged with two counts of trafficking heroin, maintaining a vehicle or place for a controlled substance, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked at the Brunswick County jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
