Donald H. Hammond, of Ocean Isle Beach, died peacefully with his family by his side on July 24, 2015, after a long illness to be with the Lord and his family and friends who went before us. He was 72.
He was born May 14, 1943, in Patterson, New Jersey, a son of Henry P. and Marion (Westerland) Hammond.
His love and interests were spending time with family, long drives, restoring old cars, car shows, NASCAR racing and televison. He worked in the auto body business from the age of 14 until his illness caused him to stop.
He leaves the love of his life, his wife of 25 years, Betty (McDonald) Hammond; children, Jenni (Tom) Utter and Edsel (Christina) Hammond; stepchildren, Kelly (Steve) Soutiere, Stephen Martin and significant other Amy Rodjenski and Shawn (Ramona) Martin; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; along with his five four-legged furry kids, Purlee, Max, Zippo, GrayKat and Smokey. He also leaves his siblings, Roger Hammond, Linda (Rodney) Bora and Marilyn (Alan) Trombly; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton (Ethel), Clement (Ethel) and Gary McDonald, Ruth Trombly, Janet Maring, Joyce (George) Ferdette and Donna Amstein; and many nieces, nephews and friends, including close lifelong friend, Bob Ferguson.
He was precededed in death by his parents; sister, Roberta Feguson; and stepdaughter, Kim Smith.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Sr. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte. There will also be a memorial Mass in Vermont at a date to be determined.

The family would like to thank the ninth floor staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and hospice for their loving care during Donny’s stay.
