Troopers with the N. C. State Highway Patrol are investigating a single-vehicle wreck on I-40 in Pender County on Thursday.

An SUV was traveling east on I-40 at about 3 p.m., when it hydroplaned near exit 408 at Rocky Point, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Sgt. D.L. Cavanaugh. The vehicle flipped over a cable and landed in the shoulder of the westbound lane.

Three people—including a 7-year-old child—were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment, Cavanaugh said. The child was reportedly in serious condition Thursday evening. The other two people are in stable condition.

Traffic in the westbound lane of I-40 was backed up for about an hour. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck. The investigation is ongoing, Cavanaugh said.
