The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has launched an investigation into the Wilmington Police Department.

The SBI is investigating allegations of mishandling evidence at the police department at the request of Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous and District Attorney Ben David, according to SBI spokeswoman Teresa West.

Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley said the SBI is looking into an incident where evidence was not properly logged by a civilian employee.

“The request came after an internal review of the agency’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit turned up several pieces of evidence that had not been properly cataloged,” Rawley added.

The police department is also conducting an internal investigation. No personnel action has been taken as a result of the investigation at this time.

“It is imperative that we continue to inspect and police ourselves,” Evangelous said. “In an effort to maintain the public trust, I believe that using a third party to conduct these investigations is essential.”
