Raymond Keeler Sawyer, 75, served aboard various aircraft carriers with US Navy for 20 years

Raymond Keeler Sawyer, of Southport, died peacefully at home with his son and daughter-in-law with him on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at the age of 75.

He was born in Philadelphia on Aug. 2, 1939, to Burdette Cleveland Sawyer and Lillian Stillings Sawyer. At the age of 20, he joined the U.S. Navy where he met and married the love of his life, Debbie Sawyer. He spent the next 20-plus years serving his country aboard various aircraft carriers before retiring in 1979 and moving his family to settle in Southport.

He also spent 10 years running a family owned dry cleaning business, the Glam-O-Rama, before retiring for good.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his three children, B.J. Sawyer, of Boiling Spring Lakes, Michelle Sawyer, of Westport, Connecticut, and Renee Reed, of Oak Island; grandchildren, Zachary Dalton, of Southport, Jessica Bettinghaus, of Florida, and Jordan Reed, of Oak Island; daughter-in-law, Roxieanna Sawyer; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Simmons Sawyer; parents, Burdette and Lillian Sawyer; brother, Danny Sawyer; and sister, Jessie Barnes.

Due to his military service, Mr. Sawyer will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
