A Cumberland County woman has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a 27-year-old man on Sunday afternoon in Kure Beach.
Tonya Michelle Jones, 38, of Hope Mills, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in connection with a shooting reported in the 100 block of North K Avenue, according to Kure Beach Police Chief Dennis Cooper.
The victim, who is from Alamance County, was reportedly shot in the thigh about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Cooper said. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting began as a verbal confrontation and quickly escalated into a physical altercation that ended after a shot was fired,” Copper said.
Officers with the Carolina Beach Police Department and deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle just north of the Snow’s Cut Bridge on Sunday, when authorities arrested three people and a minor.
Jones was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. Monday and booked at the New Hanover County jail under a $75,000 secured bond.
“The incident is still under investigation and other charges may be filed pending the outcome of the findings,” Cooper said. “We do wish to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Carolina Beach Police [Department] and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for their timely assistance.”
Jones is scheduled to make her first appearance in New Hanover County District Court on Monday.
