Mary Jane “M.J.” Reid, of Wilmington, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at the age of 86.

She was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on July 2, 1929, and was one of Jacob and Helen Fegely’s six children.

Early on, M.J. was an award-winning newspaper reporter for the society stories in the local newspaper, “The Pottstown Mercury.” It was at the Mercury where she met and married Bob Reid after only three dates. Their free spirits, sense of adventure and love of nature were apparent as they traveled cross-country several times in their VW bus with their four children in tow and tent-camped along the way.

They enjoyed restoring old houses together and their passion, creativity and quest for beauty and balance were reflected in homes painstakingly restored in New York, California and North Carolina. M.J. was a very talented writer and a very creative woman. Her stained glass creations, quilts and writings will always be cherished by her family members.

Perhaps the most admirable quality that Mary Jane possessed was her ability to relate to all people and find the humor in almost any situation. Mary Jane will be remembered by all as a truly kind, generous, caring, thoughtful and calming woman who could always, always make us laugh.

She will be deeply missed by all of us who had the great privilege of knowing her; to know Mary Jane was to love Mary Jane. To be so loved and so cherished is to have lived a full and meaningful life. We wish you safe travels and bid you peace, M.J.

Survivors include her sister, Betty Tobias, of Pound Ridge, New York; children, Alex, of Bismarck, North Dakota, Anne Leonard (Eddie), of Carmel, New York, Babbie Swan, of Milford, Connecticut and Trish Buerger (Bob), of Watha; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many adoring nieces and nephews; and several beloved grand dogs.

As per M.J.’s request, a picnic to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
