UNCW soccer uses summer experiences to prepare for 2015 season

Several members of the UNCW men’s soccer team have spent their summer vacation playing the sport they love, while preparing for the upcoming NCAA season.

Playing for DC United U23 of the Premier Development League, senior forward Colin Bonner has scored six goals in 10 matches. In addition, the Fulton, Maryland, native has also trained with the DC United first team at times throughout the summer.

Junior goalkeeper Sean Melvin has been a consistent fixture in the starting lineup for the Foothills Calgary PDL team. He traveled to Vancouver last week to begin training with the Vancouver Whitecaps first team for the remainder of the summer.

Senior midfielder Michael Mecham has enjoyed his summer by playing for the Carolina Railhawks U23 squad of the National Premier Soccer League. He also spent time training with Railhawks’ first team, which plays in the North American Soccer League.

In addition, incoming freshmen Ben Fisher and Matt Gianfortone have spent time with the Carolina Railhawks first team on an amateur contract, while appearing in exhibition matches. Another member of this year’s incoming class, David Lozano, has spent time training with the Charlotte Independence first team.

A quartet of Seahawks, including senior defender Spenver Tayloe, senior goalkeeper Sam Williams, senior midfielder Daniel Escobar and sophomore midfielder Kalvin Kromer, has spent time training with the Wilmington Hammerheads first team.

The Seahawks, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, will open their 2015 regular season schedule on Aug. 28 against High Point at 7 p.m.
