Melrose Straughan Thomas, of Wilmington, died Friday, July 10, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
She was born in Rocky Mount, the daughter of the late Walter Clyde and Inez Melrose Straughan and was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, George Wilbur “Bill” Thomas and an infant son, George Wilbur Thomas Jr.
Melrose graduated from New Hanover High School where she was a cheerleader and appeared in school musicals. She was a member of the Wilmington Women’s Club where she volunteered in many of the club’s charitable events, retired as a teaching assistant at Ogden Elementary School and was an active 40-year member of the Hanover Seaside Club. She was a communicate of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for many years.
Surviving are her daughters, Karen Thomas, of Wilmington, Betsy Doss and husband, Lee, of Raleigh, and Nancy Morris and husband, David, of Valdosta, Georgia; son, Bobby Thomas and wife, Cheri, of Wilmington; grandchildren, Kristen Seawell (Billy), Leigh Anne Blackmon (Ryan), Andy and Becky Morris, Shawn (Meghan) Bennett and Brandon and Bailey Bennett; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Lacy Seawell, Collins Blackmon and Lilly Bennett; brother, Walter Clyde Straughan Jr.; and sister, Dixie Peterson (Don).
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev. Mark Opgrand. Interment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
