Laura Suzanne “Sue” Murphy, of Wilmington, died peacefully on July 7, 2015, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 81.

Sue was the daughter of the late Norman and Irene Fuller, of Michigan. She was married to the late Patrick “Pat” J. Murphy for 50 years.

Sue is survived by her children, Michael P. Murphy, Rebecca L. Grulich and husband Charles and Kelly M. Hall and husband Mark; grandsons, Hunter P. Hall and Hudson R. Hall; and sister, Sharon Rymas and husband Robert, of Florida.

Sue graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit in 1952 and after graduation, she entered the U.S. Air Force. She was stationed at several bases and was in Virginia, studying to become a cryptographer and making a career in the service, when her father fell ill. She was honorably discharged to go home and take care of him and her younger sister, Sharon. Sue’s father passed in June of 1956.

Sue started working for Kilpatrick & Martin Engineering in Detroit. She was a great athlete who played softball, enjoyed bowling and roller skating and was a member of a ski club. Soon she met her husband, Pat, and they were wed on June 24, 1961, in Westland, Michigan where they raised their children.

Later in life Sue and Pat retired to Ft. Myers, Florida, to be closer to family and friends. She will be missed by many.

Sue didn’t want a service, just happy memories.

Donations may be made to Liberty Homecare & Hospice Services, 2550 S. 41st St., Wilmington NC 28403.

The family would like to give a special thank-you to all the wonderful staff at the Davis Community and Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral & Cremation Service.
