Donald Wayne Wells, devoted husband, father and friend, died Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 72.

He was born May 17, 1943, the son of the late Leonard Wells and Alma Gray Wells of Burgaw. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Benjamin Wells, and sister, Larrisa Messer.

Donald was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Vietnam era. He retired from Ideal Cement after 17 years of service and was employed with Louisiana Pacific for seven years.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby F. Wells; sons, Asher Lee Wells, of the home, Brantley Wayne Wells, of Chapel Hill, and Robbie Bascom Wells, of Bolton; daughters, Hope Wells McFarland, of Kernersville, and Opal Marie Wells, of Leland; six sisters; one brother; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Andrews Valley Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
