Novant Health Foundation Brunswick Medical Center has received a $46,150 grant from Susan G. Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast to help provide breast screenings to uninsured and underinsured women in Brunswick County.
“Fifty percent of Brunswick County women don’t receive mammograms due to lack of funds,” said June Baker, director of the foundation. Compared to other counties in the state, “that’s pretty high,” Baker said.
Women over the age of 40 who are uninsured or underinsured (meaning those with high deductibles), live in the county and have not had a mammogram in the last year qualify for a free screening.
The foundation received notice that they won the grant in May after a three-month application process. They have already received the first of their two checks and have put it to use, administering diagnostic screenings at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, as well as on their mobile mammography coach. The coach, which has been in service for about a year, helps healthcare workers reach more people in the community.
“We target areas that are underserved,” said Baker, listing community gatherings, churches, civic events and local businesses as places the coach visits.
Though the foundation has several different funds, the grant money is earmarked specifically to go toward mammograms, which remain the best way to detect breast cancer, Baker said.
“Those funds were really needed, and they’re going to assist low-income families and underserved women with breast cancer screenings,” Baker said. “We’re most grateful to the Komen foundation for this grant.”
Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center is located at 240 Hospital Drive in Bolivia. The mobile mammography coach will be in the following locations in July and August:
- July 29 – Brunswick County Association of Realtors in Supply
- July 30 – Waterford Medical Plaza in Leland
- Aug. 26 – Sea Trail Medica Center in Sunset Beach
- Aug. 27 – Brunswick Family Assistance Agency in Shallotte
