Sheriff: Holiday weekend checkpoint nets 6 DWI charges is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies conducted a DWI checkpoint on Friday night near downtown Wilmington.

According to Lt. Jerry Brewer, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, deputies arrested six drivers on driving while impaired charges. Officers issued 73 total charges, which included three drug violations and more than 50 traffic citations.

The checkpoint, which was at in the 7600 block of Carolina Beach Road near River Road, was a part of the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s Booze It & Lose It initiative.
