Wilmington police are warning the public about a phone scam involving the department’s front desk number.

A man with a foreign accent has been calling the public identifying himself as a Wilmington police officer with a fictitious name, according to police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

The caller states the individual has felony warrants and threatens to arrest them if they do not purchase a money order, Lindsay said. No one has fallen victim to the scam.

Earlier this week, Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram warned residents about a “jury duty” phone scam that’s making the rounds in Brunswick County and throughout the Cape Fear region.

Anyone with information about the phone scam or the people involved is asked to contact the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600 or via Text-a-Tip at Tip708, then type your tip.
