Willie Mack Byrd Jr. died June 28, 2015, on the beach, a place he loved so much. He was 64.

Born in Fayetteville on Dec. 27, 1950, he joins his parents, Mavis Frazier Byrd and Willie Mack Byrd Sr., in heaven.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kim Holman Byrd, and their three children, Mackenzie Byrd Foust and her husband, Sean, of Wilmington and their four children, Adah, Ezra, Korah and Uriah; Holman Mack Byrd and his fiancé, Bethany Shawver, of Castle Hayne; and Michael Frazier Byrd, of Castle Hayne.

Also surviving are his sister, Beverly Byrd Stevens, and her husband, Tom, of Wake Forest; his brothers, the Rev. Tony Eugene Byrd and his wife, Lori, of Toccoa, Georgia; and Robin Wayne Byrd, of Austin, Texas; and nephews, Sam and Jonathan Markovich and Matthew, Ben and Will Byrd.

Mack graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1969 and from East Carolina University in 1974. He worked for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for 22 years. He was a founding member of Port City Community Church, where he served on the board, worked on the host team and led small groups.

Mack never met a stranger. He fought through adversity with grace and gratitude and was an inspiration to many. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. His joy was to watch his kids play sports and he was actively involved in Hoggard Athletics. He was the best “Big Daddy” to his grandchildren–always taking them to their classes and on “Big Daddy and Big Mama Dates.”

A celebration of Mack’s life will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at the Port City Community Church.
