Thomas Gordon Carter, of Leland, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at the age of 65.

Born in New Hanover County, he was a son of the late June (Parker) and Gordon Tyndall Carter.

Tommy learned to play guitar at the age of 14. He excelled so quickly that by the age of 15, he was able to play just like Chet Atkins. By ear, he learned Segovia, jazz, blues, soul, country, bluegrass and rock n’ roll. He had no musical limitations. He taught himself to sing five-part harmony.

Tommy could play any genre of music with ease. He traveled and played with many bands over the years. He was very kind-hearted and cared about others. His strong faith carried him through life’s challenges.

Tommy’s life touched so many people by not just his musical genius, but by his love for people. To the very end, Tommy was more concerned about other people than himself.

Surviving are his brother, Jeff Carter and his sisters, Theresa Carter and Janice Wilson.

Tommy’s life will be celebrated among a private family gathering.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service.
