Norwood Stewart McKoy went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at the age of 92.
Norwood and his wife Edna celebrated 66 years of marriage before her passing in 2013. Born on Feb. 26, 1923, in the farming community of Bearskin near Salemburg to John Bluin and Lila Taylor McKoy, he was the fourth of six children.
In 1943, Norwood entered the U.S. Army as WWII raged in Europe. He served in England, France and Germany in the 192nd Chemical Company and was at Normandy a few days after D-Day. In February 2014, the French government presented him their highest award, the Legion of Honor, for his service in the liberation of France.
Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, Norwood and Edna married and moved for a short time to Wilmington to work for the N.C. Shipbuilding Company from 1946 to 1947. Then, after a four-year period of farming back in Sampson County, the family moved permanently to Wilmington where he worked for 31 years at Babcock and Wilcox Boilermaker Company, retiring in 1983.
Norwood and Edna spent their retirement years traveling to 49 states and loving on their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They especially loved watching them participate in their activities and cheering them on. Norwood was always busy caring for friends, giving to others through one of his famous fish fries and visiting those in need. He was a faithful friend, a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Norwood and Edna were faithful members of Sunset Park Baptist Church for almost 30 years, and after moving across town were members of Winter Park Baptist Church for another 30 years.
Norwood and Edna were the proud parents of two special sons and are survived by their son, Bob S. McKoy and wife Marilyn, of Wilmington and son, Rick L. McKoy and wife Beth, of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Traci M. Johnson, husband Neal and children, Whitley and Lexi, Kevin S. McKoy, wife Morgan and children, Ava and Harris, Jana M. Kohout, husband Brian, and children, Brody, Levi and Aven and J. Parker McKoy, wife Lindsay and children, Emmersyn, Lennon and Beckett; and one sister, Elsie McKoy Nichols, of Roanoke, Virginia.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington with a service to follow at 2 p.m. Graveside services will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
