Officials with Harris Teeter have submitted site plans to the Town of Carolina Beach for a long-awaited grocery store on the island.

For the past several years, a sign that reads “Future site of Harris Teeter” has been on display on the property, at 1000 Lake Park Blvd., near the shopping center that houses Maxway and a what was once a movie theater.

Last week, the town’s technical review committee reviewed the plans, which call for a 53,288-square-foot Harris Teeter on a 7-acre site on Lake Park Boulevard, according to Ed Parvin, the assistant town manager for Carolina Beach.

“They’re on track to be at the planning board meeting in July. The meeting will be the second Thursday in July,” Parvin said. “Then the second Tuesday in August, it’ll go before Town Council.”

Harris Teeter plans to open the store in the spring of 2017, Parvin said. Plans call for more than 5,000 square feet in expansion area, a pharmacy drive-thru window and a fuel center. Charlotte-based Barnes Development Co. is the developer on the project.
