The Carolina Golf Association’s (CGA) 55th Annual North Carolina Amateur Championship concluded at the Country Club of Landfall on Sunday as the four-day tournament featured some of the state’s top amateur players.
More than 130 participants competed on the Nicklaus Course, including 11 local golfers. The championship was conducted at 72 holes of stroke play. After two rounds, there was a cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Severe weather in the area on Thursday and Friday postponed some of the action as nearly half the field continued rounds one, two and three into Saturday.
UNCW standout Thomas Eldridge was one of three golfers to hit a four-under-par 68 on the opening day when strong winds and torrential rain forced the delay. He was tied for first after round one and finished third overall, two strokes off the pace.
Two-time defending Carolinas Amateur champion Carter Jenkins of Raleigh overcame a three-shot deficit to capture his seventh overall CGA victory. On Father’s Day, the rising senior at UNC-Chapel Hill embraced his father, Bob, who caddied for him in the final round.
Jenkins looks to defend his Carolinas Amateur title at Greensboro Country Club (Farm course) July 9-12.
David Kostyal III and Neil Wilkinson were the only local players to make the cut. Kostyal III of Wilmington placed 17th, while Wilkinson finished tied for 36th place.
Three Wilmington Christian Academy standouts competed at the event. Austin Inman, Blake Taylor and Joey Funderburg represented WCA. All three golfers have won state championships at the high school level. Inman also just wrapped up his freshman year at Liberty University. He’s transferring to UNCW this fall to continue his golf career.
This was the sixth CGA championship hosted by the Country Club of Landfall and second on the Nicklaus course. No golfer from Wilmington has ever won a North Carolina Amateur Championship. The Nicklaus Course consists of 27 holes, 18 from the original design opened in 1990, and a third nine which was completed in 2001.
