Patricia C. Owen, a longtime resident of Kure Beach, died peacefully surrounded by her loving children on June 10, 2015, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was 80.
She is survived by her four children, Mark Owen (Karen), of Safety Harbor, Florida, Sarah Lawrence Feiock (Gerry), of Churchville, New York, Dorothy Arrowood (Jim), of Havre de Grace, Maryland and Joan Denney (Mike Edmondson), of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren who adored her.
She was a native Tar Heel born in Chapel Hill to Victor and Gradie Cook. Pat (known as Sally-Pat to her childhood friends) trained to become an X-ray technician at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. She continued her training in New York City where she met Gary Owen, who lived across the street while attending Columbia University. They were inseparable and as one for 54 years until Gary passed in 2011.
Pat was published in Life magazine in May 1956 for an award-winning X-ray study of the internal geometry of seashells. She moved around as her family grew, living in New York, New Jersey and Virginia until finally coming home to North Carolina in 1990 for a wonderful life of retirement near the sea.
Pat was a refined southern belle, a devoted wife and mother, a talented artist, a cat enthusiast and a lifelong lover of the ocean and sea life. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. August 11, 2015, at Kure Memorial Lutheran Church, 117 N. 3rd Ave., Kure Beach, NC 28449.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made by check to the North Carolina Aquarium Society, 3125 Poplarwood Court, Suite 160, Raleigh, NC 27604. In the memo line please put “In Memory of Pat Owen” and that will ensure the funds find their way to our Fort Fisher Aquarium.
Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
