Cape Fear Museum to host new summer pop-up programs is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

From hurricanes to construction, families are invited to join Cape Fear Museum of History and Science this summer for a new, interactive experience! Beginning June 15, Summer Pop-ups! are offered Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. throughout the museum.

Themes vary weekly. Admission is free for members or with general admission. Parental participation is required.

  • Summer Pop-up! Prehistoric Wilmington
    June 22 – 27
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Travel back in time to prehistoric Wilmington! Meet our giant ground sloth and examine its teeth, explore dinosaurs that lived in this region, and find out how big they were.
  • Summer Pop-up! Hurricanes
    June 15 – 20
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Discover the power of wind! Examine hurricane movements with a digital globe, test air movements with an anemometer, and experiment with tornado tubes.
  • Summer Pop-up! Starry Nights
    July 13 – 18
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Twinkle, twinkle, little star! Travel through the night sky in a digital planetarium to explore summer constellations and more.
  • Summer Pop-up! Moon Explorations
    June 29 – July 4 (No planetarium shows offered on July 3 & 4)
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Take a virtual journey to the moon in our digital planetarium! Witness the moon landing, discover lunar features up close, and rotate through our moon dance as you explore Earth’s closest celestial body.
  • Summer Pop-up! Port City Past
    July 6 – 11
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Step back in time to explore the lives of early Wilmingtonians! Join in a scavenger hunt of Museum exhibits, examine objects from the past, and create a historic toy to take home.
  • Summer Pop-up! Movement Challenge
    July 20 – 25
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Experiment with force to get work done! Work together to lift loads, move weight, and use simple machines.
  • Summer Pop-up! Back Yard Explorers
    July 27 – August 1
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Explore our natural world with Cape Fear Museum! Build a Venus flytrap puppet, pretend to be a beaver family, and make a nature journal to take home.
  • Summer Pop-up! Furs and Skulls
    August 3 – 8
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Investigate the critters that live in the Lower Cape Fear! Examine beaver furs and skulls and compare them to other local animals.
  • Summer Pop-up! Native Americans
    August 10 – 15
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Examine daily life for Native Americans from the Cape Fear Region. Explore local artifacts, the tools used by native peoples, and play a historic game.
  • Summer Pop-up! Creative Construction
    August 17 – 22
    11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    Work together to complete creative building challenges! Build a bridge, construct a tower, and practice your engineering skills.

Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, 814 Market St., is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. General admission is $8 for adults; $7 for seniors, students and military with valid ID;
$5 for children 6-17; and free for children 5 and under and for museum members. New Hanover County residents’ free day is the first Sunday of each month.
