A 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Thursday after she was reportedly bitten by a shark while swimming off Ocean Isle Beach.
According to Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith, the girl suffered three to four “minor lacerations” on her foot from what witnesses described as a 4-foot shark. The incident was reported at 12:40 p.m. on the beach strand close to Monroe Street in the center of the island, Smith said.
“Her foot was bit,” a caller explained in 911 audio released Thursday. “In her right foot around her toe…it got a hold of her foot and it bit her board in half. She was out there on a little boggie board. They said [the shark] was about 4 feet.”
The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment, Smith said. The 911 caller said the girl was alert, but her condition is unknown.
