With vacant coaching positions for the boys and girls basketball teams at Topsail, one of those spots was recently filled with the announcement of Andrew Ellington as the Lady Pirates new basketball coach.

According to a statement released by Interim Athletic Director Hill Pearsall, Ellington served as an assistant under Coach Jim Clanahan, who stepped down as head coach after two seasons. Clanahan was 14-33 overall and 5-19 in the grueling 3A/4A Mideastern Conference.

Ellington teaches English at the high school and will take over after several years as an assistant. Before his time at Topsail, he served as an assistant coach at Cary High School and helped guide the program to a conference title. From 2007-2012, Ellington served as an assistant coach at Athens Drive, while working as the head junior varsity coach during that time.

He was also a manager for the men’s basketball team at N.C. State University from 2002-2005.

Topsail is still in the process of finding a replacement for Jeff Gainey, who resigned as boys varsity basketball coach after the season.
