Kirby William “Billy” Benton Jr., of Shallotte Point, died May 31, 2015, surrounded by love and cradled in the arms of angels. Our beloved “B” escaped the prison of dementia and is free at last. He was 71.
Billy lived by the philosophy, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” which could be dispensed in small or large doses, depending on the situation. No matter how somber the occasion, it was his nature to bring a smile to the saddest face and lift the spirits of those in his presence. We will draw from the well of happy memories he leaves for us to cherish.
Billy loved nature and relished the beauty of God’s creation. He was an accomplished metal craftsman and took pride in his ability to take a plain sheet of metal and create a masterpiece, from restaurant equipment to artistic sculptures. Whatever you need, whether it was a smile and a hug to the shirt off his back, he gladly met that need.
He was born in Brunswick County on Aug. 19, 1943, a son of the late Kirby William and Evelyn Milliken Benton. He was a 1962 graduate of Shallotte High School and a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Lanier Benton; daughter, Anna Smith, of Shallotte; grandson, William Chance Smith; brother, Marvin Benton, of Greenville; and sisters, Tencie Rider, of Longwood and Lois Harrell, of Shallotte.
A celebration of his life will be conducted at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.,
Memorials may be directed to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 837, Shallotte, NC 28459 and/or the Wings Backpack Ministries, P.O. Box 2122, Shallotte, NC 28459.
Please leave online condolences for the family at Brunswick Funeral Service.
