mapriverroadRiver Road will remain closed to traffic for the next several days.

According to Malissa Talbert, spokeswoman for the City of Wilmington, the road will be closed to all through traffic from Sanders Road to Independence Boulevard because of the potential of a sink hole forming.

Drivers are encouraged to completely avoid River Road. Local traffic will be able to access River Road from Sanders Road to the Motts Creek Bridge. The road will be fully closed at the Motts Creek Bridge, just north of Sanders, to just south of Independence Boulevard at the Barnards Creek Bridge.

“City staff noticed cracks forming in the road earlier today and investigated the site further before deciding to close this portion of the road as a safety precaution,” Talbert said on Wednesday. “The road is expected to be closed for the next several days. ”

Residents who live off River Road will be able to access the road, but traffic will be limited to those cars only, Talbert said.

“The cause of the forming hole has not yet been determined. Further assessment of the area and repairs are underway. The city regrets any inconvenience this may cause and will make repairs to reopen the road as soon as possible,” Talbert said.
