John Coleman Donovan, of Hampstead, died after a prolonged illness on Wednesday, May 21, 2015, at the age of 78.
John was born in New York City to Edward and Abigail Donovan on Dec. 21, 1936.
He attended Mt. St. Michael High School in the Bronx and then graduated from the City College of New York in 1959, with a bachelor’s degree in geology. After graduation, John served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After his service, John worked as an engineer for PSEG and later for the New York Power Authority until his retirement in 2002.
John married Joyce Ann Spence in 1961. John and Joyce resided in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, where they began a family and later moved to Putnam Valley, New York until retiring in Hampstead.
John was an active man with many interests. He was an avid fisherman, an enthusiastic tennis player, a voracious reader of history and a formidable handball player. He enjoyed being a member of the DKE fraternity and the Master Gardeners Club.
He was the devoted husband to Joyce and loving father to Edward C. Donovan, of Alexandria, Virginia, Mary Kathleen Donovan, of Wappinger Falls, New York and William C. Donovan, of Denver. John is survived by his children and grandchildren, Jack (John) Donovan, Lindsey Donovan, Colin Donovan, Coleman Dusavage and Jacob Dusavage.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hampstead.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401.
