Man dies in wreck on Middle Sound Loop Road, man charged with selling guns out of his car

A Wilmington man died in a wreck in New Hanover County on Sunday.

Ralph Parker Coble, 59, was driving a motorcycle east on Middle Sound Loop Road at about 2:30 p.m., when he ran off the road and struck a tree, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper K.B. Parker.

Coble was traveling at an estimated speed of 60 mph, Parker said. The posted speed limit for Middle Sound Loop Road is 45 mph. Both Lanes in the area of Dunbar Road were closed while crews worked the scene of the wreck. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay, the following incidents were reported May 15-17:

  • A 29-year-old man was reportedly robbed at gunpoint Saturday. The victim, who drove a moped, flagged down an officer near 13th and Ann streets just after 11 p.m. The man told the officer he was robbed by three to four black men with a handgun in the area of Gores Row. The suspects took the man’s wallet.
  • An armed robbery was reported near the Sportsman’s Club at 12th and Castle streets at 6:17 p.m. Sunday. A woman said she was robbed while walking home behind the club. A black man reportedly threatened to stab the woman if she screamed. The suspect took the woman’s phone and ran off.
  • Police responded to a call about a man reportedly selling firearms out of the back of his vehicle in the 1100 block of Brown Street at 5:22 p.m. Sunday. Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly found a firearm, a high-capacity magazine and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Police arrested Alexander Duncan Martin, 20, of Wilmington, and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon. He was booked at the New Hanover County jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
