Cape Fear Academy tennis team claims seventh state title in eight years

The Cape Fear Academy boys tennis team cruised to its seventh state title in eight years on Saturday as the Hurricanes shut out O’Neal School 5-0 to clinch the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A Championship.

Tyler Smith and all-state performer Jack Gallop secured the victory with wins in singles after CFA captured three doubles matches to open competition at Barton College in Wilson.

The Hurricanes dropped just seven games in all in the championship round. Jack Gallop and Robert Schuett took an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, while Gallop claimed a 6-0, 6-1 straight set result at No. 2 singles. Tyler Smith won 6-2, 6-0 in singles and teamed up with his brother Tristan Smith for an 8-2 win as Cape Fear’s top tandem.

The Hurricanes finish the year 17-2 overall.

Doubles: No. 1 Tristan Smith/Tyler Smith (CFA) def. Temple/Moore 8-2; No. 2 Jack Gallop/Robert Schuett (CFA) def. Schirmer/Henning 8-0; No. 3 Chase Weaver/Jason Atwood (CFA) def. Bennet/Saye 8-2.

Singles: No. 2 Jack Gallop (CFA) def. Moore 6-0, 6-1; No. 3 Tyler Smith (CFA) def. Schirmer 6-2, 6-0.
