Caleb Bishop threw a complete game to help guide New Hanover to a 4-2 road win at South View on Wednesday.

The lefty allowed seven hits and struck out five as Bishop surrendered two early runs, but bounced back to throw five shutout innings to record the victory.

With the game tied at two after two, the Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

Ward Coleman went 3-for-4 with a double, while Trey Croom and Max Johnson each picked up an RBI. Cory Everett also scored two runs and Lambert Long finished with two hits.

The Wildcats (16-7) play at No. 2 Conley in the second round of the 4A playoffs.

Hoggard took a five-goal lead at the half and notched one more in the final 40 minutes to cruise past Riverside 6-0 in the 4A playoff opener on Wednesday.

The Vikings moved to 18-2-2 as the five seed in the tournament and host the winner No. 12 Rose/No. 21 Green Hope in the second round of the state tournament.

With the game tied at one, Laney answered with a goal by Baley Edwards less than one minute after Northern Durham leveled the match as the Bucs tallied six unanswered scores to advance in the 4A playoffs following a 7-1 win at home on Wednesday.

No. 9 Laney improved to 17-1-1 overall and play at No. 8 Raleigh-Broughton in the second round.

Topsail took a two-goal lead into the second half and closed the match with a 4-2 result to move onto the second round of the state playoffs. Carmen Pyrtle had two goals and one assist, while Micah Houghtalin and Amanda Allen each tallied for the Pirates. Annie Johnson finished with two assists.

Topsail plays host No. 9 Terry Sanford on Friday, May 15.

Morgan Mathis threw a one-hitter in a dominating performance for Hoggard as the Vikings advanced through the opening round of the state playoffs with a 9-0 road win on Wednesday.

Hoggard scratched one across in the first and Nia Green picked up an RBI single to go up 2-0 before the Vikings wiggled out of a bases load jam in the fourth after Mathis struck out the side.

With a four-run lead in the seventh, Hoggard broke the game open to secure a spot in the second round of the 4A tournament.

The Vikings travel to No. 9 Heritage High School on Friday, May 15.

3A Tournament

No. 5 Topsail 3    No. 28 Northeast Guilford 3

Trailing by three in the fourth, Topsail rallied to tie the game and Hunter Bizzle’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the ninth gave the Pirates a 4-3 victory to survive a 3A playoff scare in the opening round on Wednesday.

Hayley Grizzle tossed seven strong innings and Victoria Elder recorded the final six outs to record the victory. Bizzle and Hailey Glester each had an RBI, while Tanesha Williams added two hits to pace the Topsail lineup.

Fifth-seeded Topsail (16-5) plays at home against No. 12 Northwood in the second round on Friday.

No. 11 West Brunswick 15     No. 22 Southern Pines 0

Caroline Gore surrendered just one hit in a complete-game shutout and Leilani Emile hit a home run as West Brunswick cruised to a 15-0 win over Southern Pines in the playoff opener on Wednesday.

The Trojans jumped out to a five run lead after their first at-bat and never looked back.

No. 11 West Brunswick travels to No. 6 Swansboro on Friday, May 15.

 2A tournament

No. 6 North Brunswick 8      No. 27 Southern Vance 0

Sixth-seeded North Brunswick plays host to No. 22 North Pitt following an 8-0 shutout to advance in the 2A playoffs.

Kasey Klutz went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Alleigh Himes added two hits with a pair of runs batted in. Summer White also went 2-for-3. Jessi Williams struck out nine and scattered four hits in a complete-game shutout. Williams improved to 8-2 on the stripe this season.
