A local favorite purveyor of ice cream and all assortments of sweet treats now has a larger space–and an expanded menu to go with it.
Kilwins has essentially doubled the size of its longtime downtown location, 16 Market St., by tearing down the wall and taking over the neighboring unit, the former home of Dang! Southern Chic.
Ed Wolverton, president and CEO of Wilmington Downtown, Inc., said owners of the gift and clothing shop closed in January to consolidate their three locations.
“And that [downtown] location didn’t have enough space for them,” Wolverton noted. “But that gave space for Kilwins to expand…And it allowed them to double their product display for all the things they sell besides ice cream, mainly fudge and other confections.”
The expansion also made room for an additional ice cream display case, Wolverton added, giving Kilwins an opportunity to add several new flavors to its already long list of offerings. Along with the classics, Kilwins is now also serving up key lime pie, Mackinac Island fudge, rum raisin, dulce de leche, blue moon and banana fudge pie.
Wolverton said the larger space, which opened last month, could help cut down–at least a bit–on the large crowds that amass outside Kilwins, especially during the summer months.
“There is always quite a line of people standing outside in the elements. This maybe will help alleviate that,” he said. “At least, the wait should be a little more pleasant for people.”
