Topsail began its 3A title defense in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night as the Pirates broke open a two-run ballgame to advance in the tournament following an 11-1 win over Cedar Ridge.

In the bottom of the third, Trader Flora gave the home team a 3-0 lead with a three-run shot over the wall in left as the senior catcher went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

Cedar Ridge was able to get one back in the fourth, but Sam Hall drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the fifth and Sam Luchansky doubled to bring in his teammate as part of a four run fifth.

With the Pirates leading 7-1, Clark Cota homered to right and Hall smack an RBI double to end the game in six innings via the 10-run mercy rule.

Cota and Hall both had three hits apiece and combined to drive in six runs. Danny Wilson scattered two hits and struck out six over five innings to earn the victory.

No. 3 Topsail (21-2) plays at home in the second round of the playoffs on Friday, May 15. The Pirates face the winner of No. 14 Northern Nash/No. 19 Eastern Guilford.

The Vikings cruised to a 19-5 win over New Bern to advance to the fourth round of the state playoffs. Hoggard is among the final eight teams left in the tournament and get back into action at home on Friday, May 15.
