Joanne Frances Van Der Kuijl, of Kure Beach, died Monday, May 11, 2015, in a fatal car accident. She was 57.

She leaves behind her husband, Camillus “Case” P. Van Der Kuijl; children, Michael Vincent, Sara Christy, Elvira and Kurt Alan; and grandchildren, Julian Cees and Benjamin Miles. Her parents are Willard O. Smith (deceased) and AnnaMae Smith-Tergesen, from Philadelphia. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Bill, Marie, Karen and Larry.

She was a loving wife, mom, grandmom, daughter, sibling and friend, always ready to help anyone who was in need. If you met her, you knew her. She approached life optimistically with a lot of energy, a genuine strong spirit and a great sense of humor.

Joanne graduated from Marymount University in 2002 and developed a great empathy for all individuals with an intellectual disability. She worked in that field in various jobs for 14 years. The last year and a half she was director of the Brunswick Interagency Program at Brunswick Community College. She loved her job and was devoted to her students and staff, providing a home away from home for her pupils.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Brunswick Interagency Program, Brunswick Community College, P.O. Box 30, Supply, NC 28462.
