State brackets set in baseball, softball, soccer; area lacrosse, tennis teams continue playoff push

Baseball

Six teams from across the tri-county area will compete in the state tournament as the Topsail Pirates received a No. 3 seed in the 3A East Regional. After winning their first state championship in school history, the Pirates will begin their title defense at home against Cedar Ridge.

Topsail recently clinched the Mideastern Conference Tournament title following a 2-1 win over New Hanover. The Wildcats and Ashley face first-round road games in the 4A bracket, while Hoggard plays host to Sanderson as a No. 8 seed.

North Brunswick entertains Greene Central in the opening round of the 2A playoff, while West Brunswick rounds out the local ballclubs vying to keep their season alive on Wednesday.

No. 15 West Brunswick (17-5) vs. No. 18 South Johnston (13-7)

No. 13 North Brunswick (15-7) vs. No. 20 Greene Central (10-7)

Softball

After clinching top spot in the regular season standings, Topsail received a five-seed in the 3A bracket, while a resurgent West Brunswick squad claimed a favorable seed and home game to open the playoffs coming off the Mideastern Conference Tournament Championship.

Laney and North Brunswick will host home games in the first round, while Hoggard travels to Northern Durham.

4A tournament

No. 25 Hoggard (12-9) at No. 8 Northern Durham (10-10)

No. 28 Ashley (12-10) at No. 5 Harnett Central (16-2)

3A tournament

Soccer

Of the 32 teams in the east regional, the Vikings are listed fifth, while Laney earned a nine seed. New Hanover finished third in conference and play on the road against Sanderson.

N.C. Independent School Athletic Association playoffs

No. 1 Cape Fear Academy tennis vs. No. 8 Caldwell Academy on Tuesday, May 12.

The Cape Fear Academy tennis team earned the No. 1 seed in the NCISAA 2A State Tournament. The Hurricanes posted a 14-2 overall record as Coastal Rivers Conference Champions.

No. 3 Cape Fear Academy soccer vs. No. 6 Fayetteville Academy on Tuesday, May 12.

The Cape Fear Academy Varsity girls soccer team earned a three seed in the NCISAA 2A State Tournament. The Hurricanes clinched the conference title, with a 12-5-1 overall record.
