Seven golfers from the area teed off Monday in the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) State Championships.
The 79th annual 4A tournament is being held at Pinehurst Country Club, with the opening round held on Pinehurst No. 2. The 30th annual 3A event is being played at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.
The top three teams from each of the regionals along with the top three individuals not on one of the qualifying teams earned spots in the 36-hole classified championships.
On the par 72, 6,825-yard layout, Laney’s Jackson and Samuel Young competed alongside 70 other golfers on day one.
Samuel Young carded two birdies and hit five pars to finish with a 10-over-par, 82. At even par through two, the senior standout hit four straight bogeys before sinking a birdie putt on the par 3, 178-yard sixth hole. A double bogey followed on seven as Young went to the back nine with a score of six-over.
After birdieing the par 5, 580-yard 10th, Samuel Young hit bogey on the next four holes and scored five on the par-four 18th.
Jackson Young was at six-over after nine as the sophomore closed two shots behind his older brother at 85. He finished with eight pars, eight bogeys and two double bogeys.
The leaders at the 4A tournament are at two-under.
West Brunswick sent five players to the par 71, 6,513-yard course at Longleaf Country Club after the Trojans placed third at last week’s 3A East Regional.
Landon Patterson held low score honors for West Brunswick with a five-over-par 75 to finish the opening round. He birdied the first hole of the day and hit two on the par 3, 174-yard eighth. Patterson was at even par through nine before running into trouble with three bogeys and one double bogey on the back.
Drew Boyer finished day one with two birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys to close with a seven-over, 78.
Cole Snyder hit 82, Tucker Vaughn scored 83, and Dylan Howard finished with an 84.
Patterson is five strokes off the pace heading into the final round as Michael Sardinia of Cuthbertson High School holds top spot on the leaderboard after posting a one-under-par, 70. Six other golfers finished at even-par on Monday.
West Brunswick sits in 10th out of 12 teams after day one.
