John F. “Jack” Herrick, of Shallotte, died Friday, May 8, 2015, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. He was 82.

Jack was born in Albion, Michigan on June 8, 1932, the son of the late Norman F. and Ruth E. Laughlin Herrick. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Richard Herrick; sisters, Rosemary Vinson, Nancy Lee Maddox, Joan Dianne Shank, Susanne Marie Klein and Sondra Jo Goetz.

He is survived by a son, Christopher John Herrick, (Roberta), of Yankton, South Dakota; daughters, Katherine Jo Reich (Chuck), of Madison, Wisconsin and Amy Grace Venlos (Russ), of Wyoming, Michigan; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and 34 nieces and nephews.

Jack was married to Linda Potter Herrick, of the home, for 37 years. They lived in Brunswick County for 15 years. Jack was a graduate of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan with a degree in industrial engineering. During his working years he traveled to North Carolina many times for work and loved the area. He and Linda vacationed in Sunset Beach every year for 19 years before moving here in 2000.

He spent many of his first years “drowning worms” off the Sunset Beach Pier, as his wife said, and enjoyed the camaraderie of all of the locals and transplants he met. These jaunts were curtailed a bit after suffering an injury to his back during a boating accident on the intercoastal.

Both he and Linda were very active at St. Luke Lutheran Church since joining one month after moving here. He served as a member of the Lutheran Men of Mission Group, lawn mower, teller and cooks’ helper at the many church picnics and affairs. He was an active member of the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks and was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at St. Luke Lutheran Church with Pastor Henry Rehder officiating. Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium.
