Hiram “Posh” Lester Milligan, of Wilmington, died peacefully on May 8, 2015, with his longtime caregiver and adopted granddaughter, Pamela Byrd, by his side. He was 92.
He was born on Sept. 28, 1922, son of the late Mecum Milligan and Belvie Simmons Milligan, in Brunswick County. Our beloved Lester, or “Posh” as most of us knew him, was a highly decorated WWII veteran who proudly served his country with the U.S. Army.
Upon leaving the service, he met and married the late Eula Long in 1947. They resided in Brunswick County where he worked as a sharecropper and they had their three children, Amanda Milligan Smith, Lynda Milligan Holland and Hiram Lester Milligan Jr. They later moved to New Hanover County where he took a position with the city of Wilmington as a foreman for 25 years. During those 25 years, they were then blessed with the births of their first two grandsons, William Burkhart and the late Michael Holland.
After the passing of his wife in 1977, Posh relocated to his current residence in Wilmington and was blessed with his third grandson, Jason Holland, courted Ms. Hettie Elkins, of Wilmington for many years and finally came his great-grandson, William Daniel Holland.
Posh was a giving, loving person who cared for his family by every means possible. He loved to fish and hunt and shared his passion and knowledge of this sport with his family and friends. In his later years, he spent his days on his front porch watching the hummingbirds, playing with his beloved dogs, Bella and Bodie and did not miss an Atlanta Braves baseball game. Posh touched many lives and the Lord has rewarded him with his seat in heaven.
Posh is survived by his children, Amanda Milligan Smith, Lynda Milligan Holland and Hiram Lester Milligan Jr., all of Brunswick County; brothers, Lyton Milligan, John Milligan, Mike Milligan and Sherwood Milligan, all residing in North Carolina; a sister, Louise Milligan Bray, also residing in North Carolina; grandsons, William Burkhart III and Jason Holland, both of New Hanover County; and his great-grandson, William Holland, of New Hanover County.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary, Valley Chapel 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington with burial to follow beside his late wife at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Shallotte.
Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
