A Kure Beach woman died in a wreck Monday on N.C. 211 in Brunswick County.

Joanne Van Der Kuijl, 57, was driving to Brunswick Community College on N.C. 211 in a Chrysler P.T. Cruiser at about 7:25 a.m. Monday, when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado truck, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper T.D. Wheeler. The Chrysler spun around and came to rest on the road. The truck traveled off the road and overturned.

Kuijl was pronounced dead at the scene, Wheeler said. The driver of the truck—a 41-year-old man from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina—was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

He remains at the hospital, Wheeler said. His condition is unknown.

“Speed, alcohol, drug use and cell phone use are not factors [in the wreck],” Wheeler said. “At this time we do not have an indication as to why the Chrysler traveled across the center line.”

The investigation is ongoing.
