Area McDonald’s restaurants have teamed up with the U.S.S. North Carolina to raise money for the ship through its “Big Macs for the Battleship” initiative, set for Memorial Day weekend.
McDonald’s will donate 50 cents from every Big Mac sold at participating restaurants May 23-25 to go toward restorations needed for the WWII battleship, according to Heather Loftin, marketing director for the U.S.S. North Carolina.
In April, the “Generations Campaign” was launched in an effort to raise money for the $17 million project to repair the WWII battleship, which requires constructing a coffer dam to repair the hull where the ship currently is in the Cape Fear River. Loftin called the repairs “urgent.”
“Without these, the ship will no longer be able to serve as our state’s memorial to those who served and died during WWII and for all those who continue to serve and protect our nation’s freedoms,” Loftin said. “While the North Carolina defeated all enemies in battle, 50 years of corrosion has taken its toll. Her once thick steel hull is now wafer thin along the tideline. In some places a finger can poke through the hull.
“With no federal or state funding for operations, and over one-quarter million visitors each year, the North Carolina depends on passionate individuals to preserve her as a memorial and education center for our future generations.”
“We are proud to continue to help support the Battleship in its endeavors to maintain the historical integrity of the ship,” said Denny Anderson, who owns and operates 16 area McDonald’s. “By partnering with the North Carolina, McDonald’s is helping restore the state’s memorial that honors the Greatest Generation and all who have served.”
Participating McDonald’s locations include Burgaw, Carolina Beach, Clinton, Fairmont, Hampstead, Leland, Lumberton, Newton Grove, Pembroke, Rocky Point, Shallotte, Southport, St. Pauls, Sunset Beach, Supply, Surf City, Wallace, Warsaw, Whiteville and Wilmington, as well as Darlington and Hartsville, South Carolina.
