Ashley, New Hanover athletes place at state track championships is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

A trio of athletes from Wilmington placed in the top three at this weekend’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A State Track & Field Championships in Greensboro.

Competing in three different events, East Carolina University commit Jamie Stacey (Ashley) took second in girls long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 6-inches, and second in triple jump, while teammate Russell Corbett finished third in shot put with a toss of 54-feet, 4-inches.

Stacey also placed 11th in 200 meter dash and Corbett took 11th in discus.

New Hanover’s Jackson Denton captured silver in the 800 meter run and joined Henry Kunz, Will Parker and Shaffer Lisle for a sixth place finish in the 4X800 relay.

Area standouts took part in 20 of the 26 events scored on Saturday. Heather Keck (Ashley) finished sixth in pole vault, while Daniel Suggs (Ashley) captured seventh.

Mykol Branch (Laney) had a sixth-place finish in high jump and Tyree Gathright (Ashley) ended in eighth.

Ebony Williams helped propel Winston-Salem Parkland to its second consecutive state team championship. Williams was a double individual winner, taking first place in the 100 meter high hurdles, setting a new NCHSAA all-classification record in the process, and winning the 300 meter hurdle event. She also ran a leg on the record-setting 4X200 relay team.

A total of 46 schools scored points in the championship meet. The Ashley girls scored 12th out of 45 teams thanks to the strong effort by Stacey and Keck.

Sydnei Murphy of Apex also had an excellent meet and was named the championship MVP, winning both long jump and triple jump, while finishing third in both the 100 and 200 meter dash.
