Cape Fear region under tropical storm warning as Ana approaches is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

UPDATE: 12:10 p.m. Friday

The Cape Fear region is now under a tropical storm warning, according to the National Weather Service. Subtropical storm Ana is about 190 miles south of Wilmington.

Ahead of the start of hurricane season, subtropical weather is headed for the Carolinas.

According to the National Weather Service, the low pressure that has continued to make its way from the Bahamas this week–and has now been named Subtropical Storm Ana by the National Hurricane Center–could bring with it heavy rain Friday.

Forecasters are also expecting high rip tide current threats along New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender county beaches, and some beach erosion may be possible, as well. Maximum sustained winds may reach 40-45 mph.

A flood watch is in effect through Saturday morning in all three counties.

Friday morning, NWS meteorologists said the severity of the storm was a “wait and see” situation as the storm continues to meander up the east coast.
